Research Computing Support

Note to Arts and Outreach units - most of what we describe here as research support also applies to support of your work - it doesn't need to be "Research" for us to support you, we really just categorize it this way to separate it from business computing. We are open to a replacement word that covers everything if you've got one.

Because our customer base is so varied we don't maintain a detailed list of the things we do and do not provide - if you have technical needs that you don't see detailed in any of these pages, just ask and we'll see if we can find a way to give you what you need.

One thing we provide for free that is often charged for in other places is management/co-management of research systems.

Unlike some campus units we don't have a "recharge" mechanism that would allow us to bill by the hour for services. Instead we aim to supply a high level of baseline support to everyone, but this does limit our flexibility if you're working on a project where the grant is handled by another unit (Health Sciences, for example.) In these cases we're not receiving any of the IDC that pays for our staff so we would generally need to negotiate some sort of %FTE arrangement to dedicate any significant time to such a project.
